Valley NARI Luncheon: Lead Paint
Safety & Universal Design
We
know you're busy and it's hard to get away. We
have recently changed the format of our
educational events to accommodate our members'
busy schedules. Instead of having both a breakfast
and luncheon meeting each month, we are combining
the two events into one - with two speakers and
topics covered in just one monthly meeting. Come
hear important information that is relevant to
your business at a fraction of the monthly
cost! Please join us on October 26,
2010, for our next membership luncheon.
Featured speakers will be Scotts Bruns, Project
Manager from Rebuilding Together Dayton and Eileen
Bendel, Occupational Therapist with StayingAble
LLC. Scott has over 35 years
of housing experience as a builder, remodeler,
investor and building materials supplier and a
technical assistance provider. As the
Project Manager for Rebuilding Together Dayton, he
has helped to provide no-cost health and safety
improvements to over 1,000 elderly, low-income
homeowners. Topics to be discussed include
"A Field Guide for Painting, Home Maintenance and
Renovation Work" and "Help Yourself to a Healthy
Home". Scott will also touch on the EPA's New
Renovation, Repair & Painting (RRP) Rule and
how it will impact the
profession. Eileen is an Occupational
Therapist and Certified Aging-In-Place Specialist
(CAPS), and she recently started her own
consulting company. Her main objective is
Universal Design which refers to broad-spectrum
architectural planning ideas meant to produce
buildings, products and environments that are
inherently accessible to the able-bodied and the
physically disabled. She educates builders
and remodelers how on to be able to assist clients
with keeping individuals living independently in
their homes. The October

2011
Tour of Remodeled Homes
Miami
Valley NARI is planning our Tour of Remodeled
Homes for April 9-10, 2011. This year we are
hoping to have project homes represented in all
geographical sectors of the greater Dayton market
(North, South, East, and West). A survey has been
distributed to calculate the current interest in
pursuing this project. If you had not completed
the survey but wish to participate in the 2011
Tour, please click here to submit. Note that the
results are due by Friday October 1st so please
give this your immediate
attention. We believe this well
promoted and organized event will be an excellent
opportunity to advertise your company and those
particular projects that you are proud to exhibit
to the public. An actual onsite visit
to a remodeled home or business has so much
greater impact than mere pictures could ever have.
This was done successfully last year and even
longer in many other chapters of NARI throughout
the country. We've been able to draw on the
experiences of other chapters and our past several
years, collect the best ideas from each and have
put together a plan that we believe will work for
the upcoming year. |

Designing
for 65-years and Older
Population
By
Morgan Zenner
The
U.S. Census Bureau estimates just under 40 million
people in the U.S. were 65 years and older in
2009. With medical technology advancements in
recent decades, Americans tend to live on average
longer than decades earlier. According to the
National Vital Statistics Reports released by the
CDC, on the basis of mortality experienced in
2006, a person aged 65 years could expect to live
an average of 18.5 more years for a total of 83.5
years. Please click here for entire

Smart
Home Technology Conserves Resources, Increases
Convenience
Bill
Gates spent more than $100 million on a smart
house that automatically controls lighting,
digital art and security, but even non-celebrity
homeowners today are adopting the technology for
safety, comfort and convenience. "Smart homes are
the future," said John Davies, ASID, director of
design for Marrokal Design and Remodeling. The
firm recently won a National CotY Award from the
National Association of the Remodeling Industry
(NARI) for a whole-home remodel it completed in
San Diego that included a centralized computer
system. Smart homes rely on
networking, programming and automation to connect
all the devices and appliances in your home so
they can communicate with each other and with you.
With a smart home, you can control just about any
element of daily living. Systems can turn on your
coffee maker in the morning, adjust the
temperature of your heated pool or control the
time your landscape lighting goes on at night.

Shifting
Your Focus to Women can Drive
Sales By
Morgan Zenner
It's
not just an unsubstantiated theory any more: Women
are increasingly becoming the biggest
decision-makers and purchasers in the household.
In response, the remodeling industry is trying to
find ways to engage this important segment to
drive sales. Taking a cue from her
own purchasing behavior, Bobbi Eggeman, marketing
representative for Keim Lumber Co. based out of
Charm, Ohio, knew just how to get women in the
door. "Women like to feel special, so we planned a
special night just for them, to show them we're
[Keim] not just a man's world, but we have a lot
to offer women too," she says.
